Who We Help - Veterans

Veterans

Veterans can face unique employment challenges as they transition from military to civilian life. Adapting to a different working culture, translating military experience into civilian roles, and rebuilding confidence after service can all make it difficult to secure employment.

Through Lifeworks, we support veterans with tailored advice, expert coaching and practical employability support, helping them overcome barriers and move forward into rewarding civilian careers.

Through Lifeworks, we recognise the strengths, resilience and highly transferable skills that veterans bring from their service. Our programme offers personalised guidance, one-to-one coaching and practical support designed to meet individuals where they are.

We take time to understand each veteran’s goals, experience and circumstances, helping them identify realistic career pathways and approach the job market with confidence.

From confidence-building and CV development to interview preparation, training guidance and employer connections, LifeWorks provides the tools, encouragement and opportunities veterans need to secure sustainable employment that reflects their skills, values and long-term ambitions.

Liz's Story

Liz spent seventeen years serving as a medic in the Royal Navy, moving wherever she was needed – Scotland, Plymouth, Yeovilton, Portsmouth, Gibraltar, and on ships like HMS Portland, HMS Dauntless and HMS Illustrious. She loved the purpose of the work and the sense of belonging that came with it. Service life gave her structure and a role that mattered.

Leaving the military was not the ending she had imagined. She left with CPTSD after racial harassment and bullying. Listening circles with other Commonwealth personnel helped her understand she wasn’t alone, but that realisation came with its own weight. She stepped out of the Navy carrying trauma responses, a shaken sense of identity, and the fear that her skin colour might again affect her opportunities.

Patrick's Story

After losing several close family members in a single year, Patrick left the military feeling lost, unsure of his identity, and uncertain about what came next.

Joining RBVE’s Lifeworks employability course became the turning point. Over four days, he rebuilt his confidence, rediscovered his strengths, and began to see a future he hadn’t thought possible.

Today, Patrick works in cyber security and trade controls within the defence and aerospace sector. His message to anyone unexpectedly transitioning out of the military is simple: it does get better.
