Patrick's Story
Patrick’s military career spanned both the British Army and the Royal Navy, culminating in a posting aboard HMS Queen Elizabeth, one of the Royal Navy’s flagship aircraft carriers. The Armed Forces was his identity and something he expected to be a part of until retirement.
But within a single year, Patrick’s life changed in ways he could never have imagined. He lost his best friend, his mother, his sister, and a newborn child. The grief was overwhelming. Trying to carry that emotional weight while meeting the demands of military service became impossible. Patrick made the heartbreaking decision to leave the forces — not because he wanted to, but because he needed to protect his family and his own wellbeing.
Transitioning out of the military left him feeling unanchored. He describes that period as one where he felt lost, confused, and unsure of who he was without the uniform that had defined him for so long.
During this difficult time, Patrick’s support officer recommended RBVE’s Lifeworks programme. At first, he hesitated. He felt uncertain about seeking help. But he took the step, and it became a turning point in his life.
Over a four days course, Patrick experienced a profound shift. Lifeworks gave him practical tools such as CV writing and interview preparation, but more importantly, it helped him rebuild his confidence. It reminded him of his strengths, his value, and his potential. He describes the experience as genuinely life‑changing, not because of any single moment, but because it helped him see possibility again at a time when everything felt closed off.
With renewed belief in himself, Patrick began to rebuild. He threw himself into learning and discovered a passion for cyber security, a field he had never considered before Lifeworks. Over time, he built a strong portfolio of qualifications and gained experience across government, the Ministry of Defence, and the private sector.
Today, he works as an Information Security and Trade Controls Officer in the defence and aerospace sector, a role that blends national security, export compliance, and advanced information assurance. It is a career he once thought was out of reach, yet it has become his new reality.
Patrick wants anyone struggling through transition, grief, or identity loss to know that there is hope. He has gone from a place of deep disorientation to a life where he feels confident, assertive, at peace, and able to contribute something meaningful to the world.
He credits RBVE Lifeworks for helping him rebuild his foundation, the Armed Forces for shaping the person he is, and his wife and children for believing in him even when he couldn’t believe in himself.
Patrick’s journey is a powerful example that with the right support, the next chapter can be much brighter than you ever imagined.
